![]() ![]() Xixo Games Studio's plans are to focus on this positive feedback and continue working on their game. Gemma said that despite this reception, some have reached out to the studio to express their support. “We were prepared for some backlash, but the trailer definitely reached way more people than we could ever anticipate, and all the hate and negativity coming our way has definitely had a huge impact on us.” “We’re both avid fans and we wanted to make something similar, but always from a place of respect and admiration for the original. “Yes, of course Cuphead was a huge inspiration for Enchanted Portals,” Gemma wrote over Facebook. Polygon spoke with Gemma about the overwhelmingly negative feedback they've received in the past 24 hours. Xixo Games Studio is comprised of two people: a director and programmer named Daniel and an artist and composer named Gemma. The trailer has nearly 40,000 views with almost 2,000 dislikes and 600 likes at the time of this writing. Whimsical, fantastical music would've fit this game's magical aesthetic well, but everything is taken so directly from Cuphead that we're given familiar big band jazz instead. One YouTube comment points out the soundtrack might be more upsetting than anything. The jumps, projectiles, and boss designs are all the same. Enchanted Portals seems to have stepped over that line towards the latter. There's a fine line between being inspired by a work of art and making it your own-and straight-up copying it. Cuphead looks great and Enchanted Portals does too. But it becomes incredibly difficult to see this game as anything but a copycat trying to safely capture the success it's seen others seize with ingenuity when that gameplay starts.Įverything about the animation is virtually identical to Cuphead's. They must recollect all the pages of their spellbook to make it back, defeating bosses all the while. They're dragged through a portal far from home. The premise of the story is that two young magicians are fooling around with various spells and open something more powerful than they anticipated. ![]() Long as EP tries to diversify the gameplay a bit so it can stand out a bit more, I don't have any problems with it.Again, the early parts seem fine. Ever seen Sliders or read Exiles? Something like that. Hence the title there and all the weirdness they encounter. So, hey, more power to Hashil: Actually I think the theme is that the portals are sending the two kids through various dimensions and/or time periods. The creators of EP pretty much know what they want and what they were getting into when they announced it. At the end of the day it's just another (albeit extremely fun) run and gun game. People are just complaining because of the fact there hasn't been a 2D run and gun in a long while and think Cuphead broke the mold It's unique in it's style, but really that's about it. Heck Cuphead itself is taking cues from Contra and Metal Slug for their gameplay too. Plus you know how it goes when something is popular, you're going to have followers. I'm not complaining, I like the designs and it looks cute enough. I agree with Jim, it's glening from Cuphead's style when it comes to gameplay and animation choice, but that aside, the vibe is all it's own and going for a more fantasy feel then a old school toon throwback in the form of a shooter. Hence why they started up a kickstarter in the first place to make it look better. Well you gotta keep in mind that these are early concept builds, not the final product. That said, I think the game still looks really good, and I'm excited for it.Įdited by DrNoPuma on Oct 22nd 2019 at 1:22:44 PM ![]() Of course, other games get their styles ripped off all the time, and people don't complain like they have for this one. Also, it's hard to tell from the trailer, but it looks as if the gameplay has some subtle differences from Cuphead too (for example, when the boy gets hit with a hammer, instead of taking damage, he seemingly just gets squashed down for a few seconds.) It's a shame that they couldn't have strayed from Cuphead's style a little more, but I don't think it's fair to call it a complete ripoff. So many creative ideas went into this game. While the game does seem to use a similar Boss Game format and art style, the worlds, the characters, and the plotline are very different from those in Cuphead. ![]() It borrows the gameplay style, and the art and seemingly the music in its aesthetic too. The game has come under fire for seemingly being a ripoff of Cuphead. Enchanted Portals is an upcoming run and gun game by Xixo Games Studio. ![]()
